Roman Catholic
Angels are spiritual, personal, immortal creatures who serve God’s plan; each person has a guardian angel; Satan is a fallen angel, real but defeated.
What are angels? Do we each have a guardian angel, and how real is spiritual warfare? Compare what six traditions teach about angels, Satan, and the demonic.
Scripture presents a crowded unseen world: angels who minister to the heirs of salvation, and a fallen adversary with his angels who oppose them. Christians across the traditions affirm this reality, but they differ on the details — whether each believer has a guardian angel, how much attention demons deserve, and where the line falls between healthy vigilance and unhealthy preoccupation. All six traditions agree on the non-negotiables: angels are creatures, not to be worshiped; Satan is real but defeated; and Christ’s victory is the ground of the believer’s confidence in spiritual conflict.

Most Christians agree on the basics: angels are real, created beings who serve God and His people, and they must never be worshiped. Satan is also real - a fallen angel - but he is already defeated by Christ. Where the traditions differ is on the details. Catholics and Orthodox teach that each person has a guardian angel who protects and prays for them. Lutherans and Methodists agree that God guards His people through angels but warn against speculating about them or praying to them. Reformed and many Baptist churches are cautious: they affirm that angels guard God’s people but say Scripture does not clearly teach one angel per person. All six agree that spiritual warfare is real but call for calm confidence in Christ, not fear or fascination. This page presents each church’s teaching in its own words.
